Sandarac is the resin of Tetraclinis articulata, a conifer native to the dry, sunlit regions of North Africa and the western Mediterranean.

Known locally as arar, Tetraclinis articulata has long been valued not only for its resin, but for its beautifully grained wood, used in traditional craft throughout North Africa.

This tree grows slowly in mineral-rich, often challenging landscapes. Its form is compact, resilient, and enduring. It does not expand outward dramatically.

It consolidates.

Like all resins, sandarac is not produced casually. It is released in response to stress or injury, sealing the tree’s surface, protecting it from intrusion, and preserving its internal integrity.

What humans later burn as incense begins as the tree’s act of containment.
